Twinkle Twinkle Rockstar, for two electric guitars (1998)

Twinkle Twinkle Rockstar is No. 10 the collection of Polyrhythmic Modulation Studies. Most of the piece involves natural harmonics and the guitars use an alternative tuning to create a tonal sense of D major. The piece is divided into three sections, creating a loose arch form. Section one opens softly and slowly, with the two players engaging in interplay of temporal modulations. Section two enters with more energy and focuses on shifting polyrhythmic relationships. The final section returns to the slow tempo and pure sounding harmonics of the opening section, although there is less of an emphasis on the interplay of temporal modulations. As with the other studies for live performers, the exact tempi are not indicated but thought of as relative to the other player, which poses exciting challenges for the performers.
